Mitya loves Katya and is jealous of her surroundings. The young man writes to her from the village, but receives only one note in reply. When a farewell letter arrives from the girl, the unhappy lover shoots himself.

Mitya’s favorite girl is passionate about art. She is friends with future celebrities, to whom the young man is jealous. He senses the changes taking place in their relationship, and this poisons his happiness. Mitya cannot explain whether he feels love or passion for the girl.

Katya grows weary of jealousy, and when Mitya leaves for the country, she is relieved to see him off. In the summer they arrange to meet in the Crimea. In the village, the young man gradually comes to his senses and calms down. His beloved responds to all of his letters with a single short message.

He goes to the post office every day, but there are no more letters. The exhausted young man is ready to commit suicide if he does not hear from her in a week. He sees Katya everywhere and in everything. The clerk suggests that the young gentleman entertain himself with the forester’s daughter-in-law, but his date disappoints him. On Saturday, Mitya wanders through the garden in the rain all day, weeping as Katya sends him a letter of farewell the day before. Mitya shoots himself from intolerable pain.
