Mithridates fights Rome for the independence of his homeland. His two sons, Pharnaces and Siphar, were to take care of his beloved Aspasia, whom Mithridates wanted to marry.

Soon a letter arrived telling of the death of Mithridates. This news was false, but the sons did not know it. The brothers argue over Aspasia. The girl herself was in love with Siphar.

Returning Mithridates learns of the betrayal of his beloved and his sons. Pharnaces betrays his father twice, as he negotiates with Rome in secret. The father imprisons his son, while Aspasia must die of poison.

Pharnaces is released from prison. Together with his father, he fights against the Romans. Mithridates understands that defeat is inevitable and kills himself. Before he dies, he gives Aspasia to Sipharus.
