Martin Eden, a 20-year-old sailor, defended Arthur Morse from a gang of hooligans on a ferry trip. In gratitude, Arthur invited his savior to visit. The Morse family was educated and wealthy.

Martin was delighted with the atmosphere of their home. He especially liked Arthur’s sister Ruth. He wants to become worthy of the girl and goes to the library, where he studies literature and language. Ruth helps Martin with his studies.

After Martin has spent the last of his earnings, he goes to sea again, being hired as a sailor. Eight months later, he decides to become a writer. Back in Oakland, the hero begins to make his dream come true. He confesses his feelings to Ruth and they announce their engagement.

Martin’s work is not published, and after a while Ruth leaves him. Eventually, he manages to meet some real connoisseurs of literature. His talent is finally noticed and he becomes a popular writer, but he has become deeply indifferent to it all.
