The novel’s protagonist, Fanny, came from a poor family. The girl’s aunt had married the wealthy baronet Bertram, owner of Mansfield Park Manor. The woman placed her sister, Mrs. Norris, on his property to look after her daughters, Maria and Julia. Guided by charitable considerations, the women took in their niece, Fanny.

The girl likes the baronet’s youngest son, Edmund. The young man has decided to become a priest. One day, the Crawfords come to the estate: Mary and her brother Henry. Edmund falls in love with Mary, and Henry courts Mary, who has been betrothed. Consequently, she soon leaves the estate.

After Mary leaves, Henry proposes to Fanny, but she refuses him. After a while, he seduces Maria and flees Rushworth with her. After this, a shadow of disgrace falls on the Bertram family, and its representatives sever all ties with the perpetrators of their troubles.
