The main characters are the employees of a commercial organization, Robert Smithers, as well as Thomas Potter.

The profits made by the two aforementioned representatives of the strong sex were a rather limited income. The two men had a warm friendship. They spent almost the entire day together — at the same time in the morning the young men would leave the house, have lunch at the city cafe on a daily basis, and in the evenings they would enjoy each other’s company. The main characters hit it off despite the fact that their temperaments could not be called identical — Mr. Smither was melancholic, while Mr. Potter was choleric. The clothes they wore differed as well — while Robert preferred a jacket with a black tie, Thomas wore a blue jacket made of coarse cloth and fitted with wooden buttons.

In due course, having received their salaries for the past three months, the boys decided to spend the money on a nice vacation.
