Walker has been administrator of the island for a quarter of a century. Two years ago, a certain Mr. Mackintosh came to the island from Aberdeen and became Walker’s secretary. Gradually the 60-year-old Walker and the 30-year-old Mackintosh become rivals.

Raincoat proved to be a difficult man to communicate with. After a while, he has a conflict with the local population. McIntosh experiences contempt and squeamishness toward Walker, which later turns into a growing hatred and resentment of his actions.

Raincoat hopes that the arrogant and short-sighted administrator will finally be taught a lesson. He begins to question whether he should go that far.
