Once the son of a newspaper owner, Oliver Crown, upon his return from Europe to New York after the end of World War I, decides to set up a joint airplane business with his buddies. Soon he meets a lady named Lucy. The latter was a young biologist working at Columbia University. After a while, Oliver begins to have loving feelings for Mrs. Crown, and they later enter into a marriage union. After his father commits suicide, the young couple goes to live in the community of Hartford.

Oliver and Lucy have a child together, a son named Tony. Because of the trauma he received as a child, he had to stay at home a lot. In order to give the boy someone to talk to, Oliver hired Jeff Banner. In the future, the latter had sexual intercourse with Lucy, but the husband forgave his wife. But Tony then held a grudge against his mother.

Many years went by. Oliver died in one of the battles of World War II, and Lucy accidentally met her son in Paris. He eventually forgave his mother.
