Isabel writes a letter to Laura, asking her to tell her and her daughter Marianne about Laura’s adventures and misfortunes. A friend tells her about knowing Isabel. She was the girl’s neighbor in Wales and lived there out of poverty.

Laura recalls a stranger stopping at her house one evening. The stranger told the girl and her family what had happened to him.

He came from an aristocratic family and was often called Edward. His father wanted his son to marry Lady Dorothea, but the young man refused. After that, he went to his aunt’s house, but he got lost and stumbled upon Laura’s house. Soon Edward and Laura get married.

The newlyweds go to Edward’s aunt’s house. For her and her sister Augusta, the young man’s wedding comes as a surprise. Laura overhears the conversation between her husband and Augusta. She learns that her sister is worried about their father’s reaction. But Louise’s husband says he does not need his favor and agrees to live poorly with his beloved.
