Tender and timid feelings arise against the backdrop of disturbing events in the district. Men plunder and set fire to noblemen’s estates.

Peasant unrest reaches Lizaveta’s estate. Mithrii the painter promises the baroness that the peasants will be careful with the lord’s house. All righteous anger will fall on the steward’s mansion. Lizaveta Petrovna understands that it is dangerous to stay where she is. She is in a hurry and prepares to leave the house.

The surveyor postpones his departure for a time to accompany his beloved. Being close to Lizaveta Petrovna at this difficult moment, the young man decides to make a delicate confession.
