Ivchikov is approached on the street by a stranger who tries to guess his name. He introduces himself as an old friend that the hero has forgotten about and asks to participate in an experiment. Ivchikov refused, as he was on his way to work in the archives, but the stranger took him away anyway.

The companion introduces himself as Serafim Serafimovich Kolobashkin, and the hero as Vladimir Yeremeyevich Ivchikov. On the way, they run into «Fantast» magazine, whose editor headed the department of a scientific institute.

To the right of the magazine was the research institute where Kira Burmistrova worked. At the moment she was conducting an experiment on rats. Before editor Zenin, Kolobashkin represents Ivchikov as the author.

According to Kolobashnikov’s version, Volodya did not write the promised story for the April issue and therefore agreed to be Burmistrova’s test subject. The former test subject ended up in the hospital and Serafim agreed to take Ivchikov. Kolobashnikov claims to have composed a new story, which he has not yet written down.
