The main character is Jacques. The latter held the position of footman and served a man named Master.

One day they were on the road. Jacques, referring to the events of his past, stated that the devil should have beaten the innkeeper and the establishment of which he was the owner. The master admonished his subordinate, saying that this was no way for Christians to behave. But the footman, as if he did not notice his master’s slight displeasure, continued the conversation.

Jacques told him that he had once drunk wine that did not have unparalleled taste. The effects of the alcohol had clouded his senses and he had forgotten to send the horses to the watering place. The father of the main character beat up the latter. At the same time, a regiment was passing near their house on its way to a camp near Fontenoy. The offended lad decided to go with the soldiers.

Soon Jacques took part in the fighting and was wounded in the knee. He added that because the bullet hit him, he managed to fall in love.
