John the Landless, taking advantage of the absence of the rightful monarch Richard the Lionheart, causes a former feud between the Saxons and the Normans.

Cedric of Rotterwood wishes to put the weak-willed Saxon Athelstan on the throne and give him Lady Rowena, his ward. But she is in love with Ivanhoe, the son of her tutor.

To keep the young people from upsetting his political plans, Cedric sends his son on a crusade. Returning incognito, Ivanhoe wins the tournament but is wounded. The girl and her father recognize the knight.

Cedric and Rowena return, but they are attacked by the Templars de Boisgilbert and de Boeuf and brought to the latter’s castle. Bouagilber forces Rowena to marry him. Cedric and Loxley’s servants besiege the castle. The Black Knight joins them. They set fire to the castle, but Boisgilbert escapes.

The wounded Ivanhoe is nursed back to health by the Jewess Rebecca, but the boy´s heart is taken.

It turns out that the Black Knight is Richard the Lionheart. Ivanhoe helps him take the throne and marries Rowena.
