The action of the novel takes place in 1948. The famous car racer Clairfais goes to a sanatorium located in the Alpine mountains to visit his friend and former car racer Holman there. There he meets a young Belgian girl, Liliane Dunkirk, who is dying of tuberculosis.

After her friend’s death, the girl decides to leave the sanatorium to live her last months to the fullest. Together with Clerfet, she goes to Paris, where the couple have fun: going to restaurants and exhibitions, traveling.

After a while, Clairfais, in love, proposes to Lillian, but the girl refuses. Liliane knows that she is going to die soon and decides to part with her beloved.

During a race in Monte Carlo, Clairfait has a terrible accident and dies without regaining consciousness. Grief-stricken, Lilian returns to Switzerland. On her way she meets Holman, who has recovered from his illness and who has been hired to replace Clerfet. After a month and a half, the girl dies.
