The protagonist of the work is Philip Pirrip.

When the latter was a boy, he began to call himself Pip. Later, such a nickname began to be used by his comrades.

That his father carried the above name, the boy learned thanks to the inscription, which was placed on the tombstone. In addition, Philip’s sister, Mrs. Joe Gargery, confirmed this information. The protagonist claims that he never got to see his parents alive, however, as well as his own five brothers who died in infancy.

The boy imagined, with the help of tombstones, what his father and mother were like in life.

Studying the inscriptions, the child came to the conclusion that his father was a broad-shouldered man of dense build, who wore curly black hair, while his mother was thin and at the same time freckled lady.

Philip lived in a swampy area near a river that flowed a few dozen miles into the sea.
