The story «The Holy Mountain» tells of a girl who has lived all her life at a tea house on the Holy Mountain. During her life she has witnessed the cataclysms shaking China. The heroine shows humility and accepts all the hardships that have befallen her.

In the chapter «Mongolia,» the main character was a spirit. He traveled through human bodies, trying to find the origins of his kindred soul. During his travels, the spirit remains only an outside observer, he sees the emotions and feelings of the people he has inhabited, reads their thoughts, but is unable to share them. As a result, he finds himself faced with a difficult moral choice.
