He was going to tell everything to his father, who was trying to marry him off to his half-sister. The potential bride was his daughter from a side marriage. After the death of his first spouse, the man married a second time. A daughter born of such a marriage was not considered a full citizen and could not be the mother of legitimate children.

Such a union of children by the same father was not forbidden under Athenian law, since it helped to preserve property within the same family. When the father learned of his son’s intention to marry a poor girl, he resisted it.
