The poem itself was divided into four books, in each of which Virgil tells of the cultivation of the land and the care of the animals that have accompanied mankind throughout the human race.

The poet devoted the first book to agriculture.  In addition to the usual description of the processes of cultivation, to which the first half of the book was devoted, the poet also touched on symbolism in some technical points. In one of the verses where Virgil described the plow, for example, he discussed its model, which was associated with the age of Jupiter and its connection to past eras.

The second book continues the theme of farming, while touching on the relationship between nature and man. The conflict was considered through the prism of the transition of power from one deity to another (in this case, from Saturn to Jupiter).

The third is devoted to animal husbandry, and the first half is permeated with indignation over the sexual life of animals. The fourth is about bees and their comparison to humans.
