Georges Danden was a rich peasant. He wanted to become related to the aristocracy so that in the future he would be called «Monsieur de la Dandinière. In this regard, instead of marrying a peasant woman, he decides to marry the beautiful Angelique.

His bride came from a noble family. She was the daughter of the Baron de Sotanville. The girl’s family was now ruined. The parents were able to get for their daughter a good sum of money. In the end, the deal struck was profitable for the Sotanville family.

After the wedding, Dunden gets into trouble. His noble relatives constantly lecture and rebuke him. In their opinion, the son-in-law has received a bad upbringing. His wife looks down on him and is ashamed to utter his name in society.

Angelica thinks that, in spite of his money, he is not worthy to be her husband. Soon she begins to be courted by a handsome young man who holds the title of Viscount.
