On the island of Crete lived the talented sculptor Pygmalion. The work of the man belonged to many magnificent sculptures and monuments. The glory of the sculptor’s skill went around the world, reaching the divine Olympus. The only thing that overshadowed Pygmalion’s existence was the fact that he never met a life partner.

One day he made a statue of a young girl out of ivory. So beautiful was the sculptor’s creation that unnoticed he fell in love with it. Pygmalion gave the sweethearted sculpture gifts and dressed her in rich outfits. But the stone statue remained cold to his feelings.

Then on the day of the feast in honor of Aphrodite the sculptor sacrificed a calf, asking the goddess to send him a bride who would be as beautiful as his creation. When Pygmalion arrived home, he was thrilled to discover that the goddess of love had brought the statue to life. The sculptor named his betrothed Galatea.
