Five peas lived in a string house. While they were small and the pod was green, they were comfortable. But then the pod turned yellow and wrinkled.

The peas wished to leave their world. And when the pod fell into the hands of a tomboy, they were very happy.

The boy put the peas in a tube to shoot. Some fell to the ground, others flew God knows where, but one fell on the gutter, where it sprouted in the damp moss.

There was an attic window next to the gutter. There, in a room, lived a poor woman with a sick daughter. No matter how much the woman worked and spent on doctors, the girl was not getting better. The mother resigned herself to the idea that her daughter was going to die.

In the spring, a sprout of peas appeared on the drainpipe, and the girl was happy. The mother decided to please the sick child, and tied up the sprout so that it could wiggle. And the more the girl watched the pea grow, the better she felt.

When the peas bloomed, the girl got out of bed for the first time. The rest of the peas were gone, except two were eaten by pigeons.
