Nikolai Kirsanov’s son Arkady arrives with medical student Evgeny Bazarov. The latter looks strange, which makes his host and especially his brother Pavel Kirsanov dislike him. Evgeny is a nihilist, denying art, believing that the main thing is the exact sciences.

Fenechka, the mistress of Nikolai Kirsanov, who gave birth to his illegitimate son, lives in the house. The father is embarrassed in front of Arkady. Arguments often break out between Pavel Kirsanov and Bazarov, which Arkady tries to smooth over. He tells his friend about the difficult fate of his uncle.

In the city, the young men met Anna Odintsova, and the nihilist unexpectedly fell in love with her. Arkady, on the other hand, likes Anna’s younger sister, Katya.

After a duel between Pavel and Evgeny, which ends with Kirsanov slightly wounded, Bazarov leaves. He works with a corpse and accidentally cuts his finger. Dying of blood poisoning, Bazarov declares his love to Anna.

Arkady marries Katya, his father marries Fenechka, Pavel goes abroad, and Anna marries. Bazarov’s parents care for their son’s grave.
