The protagonist went to rest in the territory of a small village, which is placed among the picturesque expanses of the province of Perigord, which is in France. He stayed in a small hotel, which belonged to Jean Pettion.

One fall, the protagonist got into his car and drove off to rest in the countryside. Soon he sat down on a fallen trunk of an oak tree and proceeded to eat. No sooner had the main character eaten than he saw a pig walking in his direction. The animal had a well-groomed appearance, which indicated that its owner cared for it.

The pig weighed at least a pound, and it gave off the scent of perfume «Joy», the name of which the protagonist could not immediately remember. After a while he gave the pig some cheese and noticed that it was wearing a collar. The protagonist thought that the animal was lost, so he decided to take it to the village to find its owner. Upon arrival at his destination, the protagonist learned that the pig had a name — Esmeralda.
