Gerald writes about how he always wanted to explore the behavior of animals and the variety of their habits as well as their instincts. Because of the above-mentioned reasons, the writer constantly wanted to meet different animals.

Darrell states that even the ugliest and most horrible animal has certain attractive features. He states that a situation may arise when a person meets an animal that he does not like, but the traveler later appreciates the actions of a representative of the fauna. The latter may be an earwig, protecting with its body a nest with its young, or a spider, which has swaddled the female with a thread, so that after mating she cannot eat it.

The writer recalls an incident from his childhood. He was living in Greece at the time. One day Gerald saw a creature coming out of a stream that he had never seen before. Eventually, Darrell realized that the creature was a dragonfly.
