Emma, the landowner’s daughter, is a matchmaker for her acquaintances. One day she meets Harriet Smith, a boarding school pupil, and tries to set her up with Elton the vicar. She dissuades Harriet from marrying Farmer Martin, considering his position too low. The new acquaintance listens to Emma and refuses the farmer.

Mr. Knightley tries to prove to the girl the impossibility of her intended marriage. His brother warns Emma that Elton may be interested in her person.

The vicar confesses his love for Emma and his indifference to Harriet. The girl rejects his proposal and Elton leaves for Bath, where he marries another. Emma learns rumors that Mr. Knightley is in love with Miss Fairfax.

During the ball, Elton publicly refuses to dance with Harriet. Mr. Knightley asks the rejected girl to dance. Emma thanks him for his kindness. On a walk on Box Hill, Emma accidentally insults Miss Bates. Mr. Knightley reprimands the girl for it and causes her to feel remorse.
