The first part is about the adventures of the prankster Emil. In the village of Lennebergi, 5-year-old Emil lives with his parents and sister. The boy was nimble, inquisitive, and loved to mischief. One day during dinner, he decided to eat the remains of a delicious soup and stuck his head in the soup tureen. As a result, the child’s head got stuck in the dish.

Emil’s parents had to take him to the doctor. After they arrived at the doctor, the hero bumped the tureen hard against the corner of the table, and it split in half. As a reward, the boy received a coin, which he soon inadvertently swallowed.

On Sunday there was a feast on the farm. Emil’s family decided to raise a flag in honor of the event. The boy decided to take his parents’ example. He climbed up on the roof and hoisted his little sister Ida onto the flagpole. Emil wanted her to be able to admire her surroundings.

Emil rides along with employee Alfred, who has gone to a military drill. At the local fair, the boy sings pathetic songs to earn money for sweets.
