The story is told on behalf of a stallion named Emerald. He wins a race, but people shout that the horse is fake. The incomprehensible Emerald is taken to a distant village, where a groom gives him poison.

The young stallion Emerald lives at the racetrack. He has sympathy for the filly Schegolikha and feels dislike for his neighbor Onegin. He also loves groom Vasily and recognizes him from afar by his scent. At night he dreams of his mother and a meadow covered with flowers.

Before the race, Emerald is washed and dried, and his rider stretches his muscles. The horse is the first to reach the finish line. But the expected triumph does not come. Emerald is surrounded by people shouting deceit.

The horse is rubbed and groped, demanding a refund. Emerald is removed from further races. But unidentified men burst into his stables, rudely shouting and frightening the stallion.

Emerald was taken to the village. There he is placed in a separate stall, away from the horses. This leads Emerald to believe that he is being hidden. But here, too, he is found by men with harsh voices.Then the man for whom the stallion has an underlying fear gives him poisoned feed. Emerald dies.
