A poem consisting of 3 parts. It begins with the poem «The Ghost.» It talks about the ghost of a young man who loved a girl unrequitedly when he was alive. Because of his unrequited love, he was forced to endure the contempt and pity of his beloved and his surroundings. As a result of his experiences, his soul did not find peace even after his death.

The action of the second part unfolds in the evening in the chapel. The sorcerer and the old man conduct the rite of the Dziad (a rite of pagan times, according to which the priests commemorate the dead and offer them sacrifices: drink and food). The sorcerer summons the dead to give them a sacrifice.

Under the chapel, 2 angels appear — the souls of the dead infants, a brother and sister. Where they now find themselves, there was plenty to eat, so they refuse to eat. The souls of the children are concerned that they cannot find their way to heaven. This happened because they did not know the bitterness of life and died sinless. The sorcerer gives them two mustard grains so that the children will know the bitterness of life. After their souls receive the grains, they fly away.
