A young woman, Diane Ford, has a bank account with a large sum in her aunt’s will. She is an orphan but is educated and has a brilliant mind. She lives in Australia but returns to England.

Diana’s cousin Gordon Selsbury, with whom the heroine has fallen in love in absentia, lives in London and is well provided for.

Gordon falls under the radar of «Double Dan» — a bandit who takes the guise of his victims, and then steals money from them. He is aided by the con artist Eloise. Gordon platonically falls in love with Eloise, and she pretends to share the serious bachelor’s lofty feelings.

Diana arrives in London and moves into Gordon’s house uninvited. He tries to protest, but shrinks from his distant relative. Gradually he falls in love with the mad Diana.

Eloise persuades Gordon to go with her to Ostend. «Double Dan» decides to use the trip to rob Gordon. But Diana, knowing the codes to Gordon’s safe and possessing a gun, helps destroy Double Dan’s diabolical plans.
