1 minute

The writer’s personal diaries, which depict the events of his life. For several years the author wandered deliberately to see from the inside the underside of life in England. He details his experiences, the filth and stench, the poverty and hopelessness. The writer met many people and learned their harrowing stories.

The author also talks about the towns he has had the opportunity to visit. He often draws attention to the local plants and birds, everyday objects. Orwell personally visited the coal mines. Miners in them often had to work on all fours or lying down, because the height there was very low.

The writer kept two diaries at all times. One was a home diary. In it he talked about his vegetable garden, planting and sprouting, chickens and goats. The other was about his life in Morocco, about events during the war. The author followed international reports and wrote extensively about Russia.
