Not far from the city of Mytilene lived a goat-herder named Lamon. One day he found a baby in the bushes that was being fed by a goat. Two years later, the shepherd Dryas found a baby girl in the Nymph grotto. The little girl was being fed by a sheep.

Near both children were signs left here by their parents. They spoke of their noble origins. Both men decided to raise the foundlings.

When the boy Daphnis turned 15 and the girl Chloe turned 13, their foster parents sent them off to graze goats and sheep. The teenagers fall into the power of Eros and fall in love with each other.

The coastal meadows are attacked by pirates. They steal the flocks and take Daphnis away. The pirates kill the shepherd Dorcon, who gives Chloe his whistle before he dies. When the girl plays it, Dorcon’s flock on the ship hears the familiar song and rushes to shore.

The ship capsized and the outlaws drowned. Daphnis manages to escape and returns to Chloe. The heroes go through many trials before learning that they come from noble families and get married.
