The novel includes six stories in which the main characters are connected in one way or another. The first is about a San Francisco notary, Adam Ewing, awaiting the completion of repairs to his ship on Chatham Island, a remote archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.

Adam embarks on a journey around the island. He meets an English doctor named Goose. He tells the hero about the indigenous population, the Morori, who have been enslaved by the Maori warrior people. Adam admits to the doctor that his body is afflicted with a serious disease. Gus promises to cure him on the return journey.

After the repairs are completed, the ship sails. Adam finds in his own cabin a native, Atua, who is a representative of the captive people. He has managed to escape from slavery and takes refuge on the ship. The native asks for his help. Adam helps the man get a job on the ship. Doctor Gus gives the notary medicine, but he gets worse.
