Harvey Chane Jr. is the spoiled son of an American railroad magnate. While traveling to Europe, the boy falls overboard an ocean liner. He is picked up by a fishing boat. Harvey tries to convince the sailors to take him ashore, but the fishermen don’t want to give up fishing. The captain accepts the boy as a cabin boy until they return to port. Harvey has to put up with it.

After going through many trials and adventures, Harvey, with the help of the captain’s son Dan Troup, gets used to the fishermen’s way of life and even becomes a skilled sailor.

Eventually the ship returns to port, and Harvey sends a telegram to his parents. The happy mother and father immediately rush to the fishing town of Gloucester. There, Harvey’s mother rewards Sailor Manuel, who saved her son. Harvey’s father hires Dan to work in his fleet. Harvey enrolls at Stanford to learn how to run his father’s shipping company.
