The couple stays at the home of the local Presbyterian minister Rankin. The man knew Howard as the brother of his own old comrade, Miles Hallam, who had previously moved to Brazil to start a family with a lady who lived there. The judge tells Rankin that his brother has passed away and that Miles’ property has been illegally taken over by the widow’s relatives. Nevertheless, Howard manages to recover his brother’s belongings.

Lady Cicely wishes to explore the aforementioned African country with her young man and wishes to take an armed escort for the purpose of safe travel. They decide to use the services of the smuggler Brasbound, who owns the Thanksgiving ship. The protagonist warns Mr. Hallam that in Morocco it is not the courts that have power, but the codes of honor.
