James Morell is a famous minister of the Church of England and a part-time Christian socialist, as well as the husband of the main character of the work. It was to Candide that Mr. Morell owed the building of such a successful career.

One day the main character went to London, and returned to her native suburb of the British capital with Eugene Marchbanks, a young poetry writer. This guy was in love with Candida and sincerely wished to save her from a life which, in his opinion, was a boring spectacle. Eugene believed that the lady he liked deserved a better deal than to be constantly immersed in solving domestic problems.

After a while, the woman makes a difficult choice between two gentlemen-she favors her spouse, who, she says, was weaker than his rival.
