Bogdan was the illegitimate son of a gypsy woman and a lord. After giving birth, his mother ran away.

The old father was paralyzed and the household was run by his eldest son Valerian, Bogdan’s half-brother. He was a spiteful and corrupt man.

He drove his own brother to suicide and abused Bogdan. The boy could not stand it and once killed Valerian. The other relatives did not insist on investigating.

Growing up, Bogdan went to Paris. He decided to seek out the writer, who wrote about escaping from earthly mortality in a book. But Bogdan’s idol turned out to be a fraud.

The disappointed young man promised the writer to come back later and went into the spring forest. He conversed with the trees and young grass. Bogdan lay down under a huge fir tree, fell asleep and froze.

The writer waited a long time for the young man, not knowing that he was dead. Without waiting for Bogdan, he left.
