Several years passed. Miss Barbery passed away, and Esther was left alone. Soon she met a lawyer named Kenge, who represented Mr. John Jarndis. After the funeral ceremony, Kenge offered to train her at a boarding house that was located in Redding. He added that the institution would make the girl feel at home and give her a chance to prepare for the onset of adulthood.

Without thinking long, Miss Summerson, thanking her new friend, agreed.

Another six years passed. Growing up, Esther, upon graduation, was taken to the Cold House with her cousin and her relative.
