Nowhere could the goddess Latona find refuge. All over the world she was persecuted by Zeus’ jealous wife Hera and her dragon Python. Only on the wild deserted island of Delos the thunderer’s wife left her rival alone.

In those distant times Delos, like a ship, was carried on the waves of the elements. But as soon as Latona set foot on the gloomy shore, the deities of the ocean, taking pity on her, stopped the island. A grim wall of dark rocks hung over the shore. Neither animals nor plants were on the deserted Delos. Only occasionally gulls, flying over it, stopped to rest on the high mountain tops.

It was on Delos that Latona gave birth to her children — twins Apollo and Artemis. With the birth of the god of light and the goddess of the hunt the nature of the dismal island was transformed. Streams began to ring, plants awoke from their long sleep, birds sang in the sprawling crowns. The sky over Delos, previously covered with clouds, cleared up. Everything on the island was illuminated by bright divine light.
