The work tells the true story of the Great Mother, who is the only ruler of Macondo. She was in power for 92 years and recently passed away. Her funeral was attended by the High Priest from the Vatican himself.

Two weeks before her death, the ruler decided to talk to her heirs, her 9 nephews and nieces, about how much of her estate they would receive. The eldest nephew Nicanor went to get a notary public.

The Great Mother enclosed her wealth with an impregnable wall. The cousins did not go beyond her limits and were forced into closely related marriages. But this did not prevent the nephews from enjoying the right of first night on the farms and under the bush by the road, with the result that they produced a whole horde of illegitimate offspring who lived under the patronage of the Great Mother.
