The condemned man files a petition begging for reconsideration. He is charged with burglary and murder. He confesses to only the first crime. In the petition, the man tells the real story of what happened.

In an inn, he accidentally discovers the riches of Lord Mannering, an old miser who oppresses his young wife. That same night he sneaks into the house. He is spotted by the lord’s wife, Lady Mannering. She does not call for help, but invites him into the house. The woman offers the thief the gold medals of the lord, explaining that she hates her husband.

Suddenly the lord appears. He begins to insult the wife and she kills the old man. The lady helps the thief collect the gold in a sack. But as soon as he comes out, she screams and accuses him of murder. The servants seize the thief, the police arrive, and he is arrested.

The condemned man asks to investigate the case again, for the real murderer is on the loose.
