Augustes Hycastle lived in the small community of Little Pifflington.

One day he told his own secretary, Horatio Beamish, that the war was a very serious matter, after which he added that he had three brothers-in-law from Germany.

Some time later, Mr. Hycastle is informed that a lady spy unknown to him wishes to take possession of a document in his possession. Soon a beautiful woman comes to him and begins to flatter him. Their conversation is interrupted by Mr. Beamish, who has brought in a document left by his boss on the coffee table in the hotel.

The lady manages to steal the valuable paper and then escapes. Later, she calls the War Ministry and tells them that she managed to easily outsmart the protagonist. Augustes finally realizes that it was the woman who was the spy.
