Vera goes home to the estate, where her grandfather and Aunt Dasha, who has replaced her mother, are waiting for her.

Very quickly, Vera begins to get annoyed with the quiet and unhurried course of life on the estate. The girl has graduated from an institute, has learned several languages, and everything in her native estate seems miserable and boring to her. Vera does not like the factory doctor Neshchapov, whom her aunt wants her to marry; her grandfather, an old serf, is irritatingly rude; her aunt’s mannerisms are disagreeable.

The girl thinks of how noble it would be to serve the people and educate them. But she does not know the common people at all, and what can Vera teach the peasants if her aunt «gets the income from the taverns and fines the peasants?

Vera’s irritation becomes so strong that one day she lashes out at the maid and rushes at her in a fit of anger. Having come to her senses, the girl pulls herself together and marries Neshchapov.
