The night after the battle of Slivnitsa, Captain Bluntschli, a Swiss mercenary who fought on the side of the Serbs, sneaks into her bedroom through the window. The soldier tells the protagonist that she will lose her life if she raises the alarm.

Meanwhile, Russian and Bulgarian soldiers break into the house to search it. The kind-hearted Mrs. Petkoff hides the Swiss, lest he be sent to the afterlife. Mr. Bluntschli himself tells Raina that she should not forget that nine out of ten Army men are born and then become fools.

Raina, who has formed an ideal picture of the world for herself, was shocked by the captain’s pragmatic yet cynical attitude toward military action. Soon she and her mother, Katherine, secretly escorted the mercenary out of the house.
