On the steamer the writer meets Ivan Shamokhin. He discusses relationships and tells his love story to Ariadne Kotlovitch.

Having got acquainted with her, the man fell in love. The girl despised poverty, the Russian hinterland. She ran away to Italy with the married Lubkov and became his mistress.

But in Europe she became bored and summoned Shamokhin, who loved her. He arrived. But he could not stand the realization that the woman he loved was in a loving relationship with another and left for Russia.

After a while, Lubkov leaves Ariadne, and she calls Shamokhin again. The man returns to Europe and they become lovers. Gradually the passion passes, and Ivan sees all the emptiness and deceitfulness of Ariadne.

Shamokhin grows weary of his relationship with Ariadne and hopes that she will leave him for the Prince, who was once in love with her. Then he will gain his long-awaited freedom.
