Apollo, god of light, was the son of Latona and Zeus. The thunderer’s jealous wife sent the dragon Python to keep her rival at bay. The goddess could only find refuge on the wild, desert island of Delos. Here she gave birth to two children: her daughter Artemis and her son Apollo.

When the young man grew up, he decided to take revenge on his mother’s offender. He looked for Python and pierced him with an arrow from a silver bow. On his way home Apollo noticed the mischievous Eros. The deity scrambled with his arrow and bow. To his misfortune the god did not hold back and began to boast to Eros of his victory. The goddess became angry and shot an arrow with a golden tip in revenge, which made Apollo fall in love with the nymph Daphne. The prankster, on the other hand, shot the girl with a lead arrow, and she lost her ability to love.

Apollo, unable to contain his feelings, began to pursue the nymph. Seeing Daphne’s suffering, her father turned her into a laurel tree. When Apollo saw what he had done, he repented bitterly. As a sign of his love for the nymph, he decided that he would always wear a laurel wreath.
