The rich man Hremes decided to marry his daughter to the Athenian Pamphilus, much to the joy of the young man’s father Simon. For the sake of Pamphilus, Hremes refused the hand of his daughter to Harin, who was in love with her.

But Hremes has heard rumors that Pamphilus has a mistress in Athens. She is Glykeria, a native of the island of Andros. She lives in the house of a dead hetaera, and is believed to be the sister of the deceased. Enraged, Hremes breaks off the engagement.

Simon, learning that a rich dowry is floating away, quarrels with his son. The slave Dove, the young man’s attorney of love affairs, suffers as well.

A relative of the hetaera arrives from Andros. From his conversation with him, Hremes learns that Glykeria is his own daughter. His ship was once shipwrecked off the coast of Andros, and Hremes thought the child had drowned.

For his joy, Hremes marries Pamphilus to his newfound daughter Glikeria, whom he takes into his house. He gives his second daughter in marriage to Harin. They play a double wedding.
