While researching Colonel Pierce’s new project, the man comes to a room filled with electrical and mechanical devices. The room was downstairs, so the man had to go downstairs first.

Since the man’s visit was part of a tour, he and his companions were accompanied by a tour guide. He was just beginning to talk about Colonel Pierce, who initiated most of the projects.

Studying with the guide the devices in the room, the man begins to recall the beginning of his research and how he became acquainted with Pierce’s project. One of them was described in the newspaper. According to the colonel’s idea, the project was to connect the European and American continents through underwater pipes.

Thirteen million tons of iron were needed to bring the project to fruition. To transport the necessary materials, 200 steamships were required, each with a capacity of 2,000 tons.

The ships had to bring the cargo to the two main steamers, to which the ends of the pipes were attached.
