In a Norwegian seaside town, a spring of healing waters has been discovered. This event promises favorable prospects — the development of the resort, the flow of tourists and prosperity for all citizens.

The healing properties of the water were discovered by Dr. Thomas Stockman, a respected and competent specialist. Peter Stockmann, the mayor of the town and the doctor’s brother, heads the board of directors of the spa and supervises the construction of the hydrotherapy facility. Large sums of money have been invested in the project.

Thomas soon discovers that the local sewage system is contaminating the mineral waters. Tourists get seriously contaminated. Thomas submits a report and renovation project to his brother mayor. This would entail the closure of the resort and new capital investment.

The town is not ready for such a step. Defending his case, the doctor falls into disgrace and loses his practice. Thomas’s family members become outcasts. But the doctor intends to continue the fight alone.
