A story of a voyage to New York and back, based on letters to a French writer from Vienna, Alfred Perle. The narrator says he will leave on the same ship on which he arrived and asks to be tracked down.

He recalls that after the publication of his work in a revolutionary newspaper, he earned general dislike everywhere at once. Earlier, he and his friend Emil had been hanging out in one of the taverns on the outskirts. He talks about the time when he will return to Paris again.

The other day the writer met with Williams. Together they had a great hangout at the artist Heeler’s. The fun is interrupted by a doorman who shows up at the party and makes a real mess.

The author describes in detail the persons present at the party and their behavior, believing that without them, the portrait of America would not be complete. Drunkenness, beatings, broken glass and vomiting reigned everywhere. He himself was nearly smashed in the head twice. At night, the residents roamed the streets looking for trouble. Anyone could walk up to a passerby on the street and challenge him to a fight.
