Rosalie De Watville is a wealthy heiress whose parents are of noble birth. Because of her fortune, the girl attracts a lot of attention. Her father is a shy man by nature who works at a lathe.

Her mother tries to set her up with the bully Mr. de Soulas. But during dinner, Rosalie catches the eye of a young lawyer. Rosalie reads his story. The young baroness begins to suspect that the written story is true and that the protagonist is the lawyer Savaron. She becomes jealous of her lover and persuades his servants to steal his correspondence. After reading the letters, the girl’s hunches are confirmed.

The lawyer runs for election in the city, but suddenly disappears. The girl’s mother tries to arrange her marriage to Mr. de Sulas, but Rosalie is against the marriage. After the death of the girl’s father, her mother marries de Sulas herself. Rosalie tries to find Savaron. She admits to forging the lawyer’s mail.
