The story is told on behalf of one Humphrey Littlewhite, who was born in 1690 and has been alive for over 200 years. Humphrey remembers his friend, Dr. Samuel Johnson, whom he met in May 1763.

Humphrey and Samuel became friends, enjoyed discussing literary topics, and frequently attended various circles and exhibitions. Once a week the «Literary Club,» which Samuel Johnson organized, met at various places. Many important figures, artists, and writers attended these meetings. Here they spoke out on a wide variety of events.

Humphrey remembered many good things about Samuel Johnson and his club, of which he was a member long after the doctor’s death. Samuel’s son achieved great success and became a baronet. Humphrey feels very tired and is weighed down by his age.
